Learning LOTRO: Lesson Fourteen - Special Stats

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

I've glossed over the details of character stats in previous entries, but today we're going to discuss more about the basic stats... as well as dive in-depth into stats that aren't understood very well: Special Stats, or essentially everything extra that displays in your Character Panel when you check the 'Show All Stats' box.

The Character Panel

Don't tell anybody, but for the longest time I thought the icon for the Character Panel was a weird lock icon. One day, I finally realized it's a silhouette of a person. In any case, this Panel has pretty much everything you could ever want to know about your character. It shows your equipped items, cosmetic appearances you can toggle between, Skills, Titles, Biography (if you choose to write one), Wallet, House information (if you own one), Hobby, Reputation, and your advancement in The War (PvMP).

For the sake of this entry, we're just going to focus on the named and numbered stats displaying on the right-hand side of this window.

Basic Stats

Morale: The amount of damage you can take before being defeated in combat. Often called Hit Points (HP).
Power: The energy required to use your skills. Sometimes called Mana in other games, and replaced with Wrath for the Beorning race/class.
Armour: Reduces the damage you take from attacks. Gear provides damage reduction by adding to your Armour value.

Might: Might increases a character's ability to block incoming attacks with a shield and parry incoming attacks or cause greater damage with a weapon. It also reduces incoming common damage.
Agility: Agility increases a character's ability to evade and parry incoming attacks. It also improves your Hit Chance and increases the chance to critically hit a foe. [Thank you, @Smuske_Frei!]
Vitality: Vitality increases maximum Morale, Non-Combat Morale Regeneration, and Resistance Rating, which reduces the chance a character will be affected by Wound, Disease, Fear and Poison effects. It also reduces incoming damage from non-weapon sources like Fire, Frost, Lightning, Acid and Shadow.
Will: Will increases a character's ability to defend against non-physical damage sources. It also increases your maximum power pool, your Out-of-Combat Power Regeneration, and your Resistance to Disease, Fear, Poison, and Wound effects, including cowering from Dread.
Fate: Fate increases a character's In-Combat Power Regeneration and In-Combat Morale Regeneration. Fate also increases the chance and magnitude of critical hits on Tactical skills (healing and damage spells). Like Will, Fate increases a character's ability to defend against non-physical damage sources.

Offence

Critical Rating: Determines a character's or NPC's chance that any normal attack they make will be a critical hit.
Physical Mastery: Increases melee damage and ranged damage dealt by the character.
Tactical Mastery: Increases tactical damage the character deals and healing done by the character.

Defence

Light of Eärendil: A stat provided by gear which counteracts Shadow of Mordor, an effect present in all of the Plateau of Gorgoroth in Mordor to varying degrees. The Light prevents penalties inflicted by Shadow of Mordor.

Avoidance

Parry: Provides a chance to completely or partially avoid an enemy's attack, and reduces the damage taken from a partially avoided attack. A weapon must be equipped in order to parry, and your attacker must be in front of you. Your chance to parry an incoming melee or ranged hit is determined by (Might x 2) + (Agility x 2).

Evade: Provides a chance to completely or partially avoid an enemy's attack, and reduces the damage taken from a partially avoided attack. You can evade a hit from any direction. Your chance to evade an incoming melee or ranged hit is determined by (Agility x 3).

Special Stats

If we then check the box that says 'Show All Stats,' we see an additional list of stats added as follows:

Offence (cont.)

Finesse: Reduces your opponent's Resistance, Block, Parry, and Evade.

Defence (cont.)

Resistance: Provides a chance of avoiding all effects.
Critical Defence: Reduces the critical and devastating hit magnitude of incoming melee, ranged, and tactical attacks.
Incoming Healing: Increases the amount of morale which is healed.

Avoidance (cont.)

Block: A shield must be equipped in order to block, and your attacker must be in front of you. Your chance to block an incoming melee or ranged hit is determined by (Might x 3).

Mitigations

Damage Source

Melee: (Defence) Reduces the damage taken from melee attacks.
Ranged: (Defence) Reduces the damage taken from ranged attacks.
Tactical: (Defence) Reduces the damage taken from tactical attacks.

Damage Type

Physical: (Mitigation) Reduces the damage taken from physical attacks.
Tactical: (Mitigation) Reduces the damage taken from tactical attacks.

For more information about ALL of these stats, you are most welcome to wade through the information on the LOTRO Wiki: Character Stats. It's not very straightforward, and even a seasoned player like myself gets a little confused about some of it. My information here is a combination of simplifying the wiki and what the in-game hover-text provides.

How To Improve Weak Stats

Virtues

Hey! Remember last week's entry about Virtues? You can work on some of those to improve your character's weaker stats.

Stat Tomes

You can obtain stat tomes to improve one of the five basic stats: Agility, Fate, Might, Vitality, and Will. These can be obtained in a variety of ways, depending on the tome level: lootboxes, Big Battles, and the LOTRO store in-game. The stat tomes are available in ranks 1-20 for a maximum possible increase of +740 per stat.

Gear: Armour & Jewellery

Look at your equipment carefully when choosing quest rewards or making crafted items. You can go a long way towards improving your stats simply by making sure you have well-selected gear. Make sure to keep your equipment Repaired, also, as wear and tear will decrease its effectiveness.

Essences in Slotted Gear

You really won't find any gear with slots for essences at lower levels, as it mainly affects level 100+ (but there are some pieces as low as level 50). This gear can have its slots filled with essences that provide a variety of stat bonuses. I'm not about to cover the essence system here, so you can check it out on the wiki if you're curious!

Legendary Item Relics & Legacies

This option applies to characters who have gained access to Moria by completing Moria's Epic Intro quests and obtained their first Legendary Item. Legendary Items have Legacies that can be swapped out and leveled up, as well as slotted Relics up to Rank 10. This is a complex system not unlike the essences, so again... here's a wiki link if you want to look ahead at Legendary Items and what you'll be facing as you quest your way through Khazad-dûm and beyond.
