Extra Life Marathon Countdown

The 24-hour Extra Life marathon is in 4 weeks, so I thought it would be fun to do a weekly entry counting down to the event. There's a lot going on this year, so keep reading and get excited!

Extra Life

If you don't know what Extra Life is, it's pretty simple: It is an organized charity in which gamers play games to raise money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Each participant can set up their own donation page and choose a hospital to raise funds for. 100% of the donations go directly to the hospitals! Participants can choose to fundraise on their own or form teams. Many game developers create teams as well and offer in-game rewards to their donors. Extra Life was started because of a little girl named Victoria Enmon, and you can learn more about her legacy by watching this video.

8 Years of snarkqueen

That's right, this is my 8th year of participation in Extra Life! So far, it's also looking like my best. It's a month away from the marathon and I have raised more than double my original goal for the year -- and surpassed my record from a previous year. I've received donations in the process of writing this entry, even... and at the time of writing this sentence I am at $2,100. My new goal for the year is $3,000!

Personal Incentives

This year I decided to offer just four personal incentives for donors, opting for a wider variety of rewards for everyone as a whole. The four personal incentives are:

  • $10: Social Media Shout-Out

Every $10 donor will get a shout-out on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and my blog, so everyone knows you're helping me be a hero for the kids!

  • $25: Art Postcard (Gamer Reverie)

The first 100 people to donate $25 will get a custom Art Postcard with the Gamer Reverie blog logo and personalized message from me, thanking them for supporting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

  • $50: Fanfic Cameo (LLVL)

The first 9 people to donate $50 will have a name of their choosing appear in the LLVL fanfic, based on Lord of the Rings Online and appearing only in the Gamer Reverie blog. You'll be internet famous! (7 left at the time of writing this.)

  • $100: Amazon Gift Card Raffle (January 2021)

Every $100 donor will have their name entered into a raffle for an Amazon Gift Card. The amount will be 10% of my final total of donations for 2020, up to the original goal of $1k ($100 value). The raffle will take place in January and the winner will be notified by e-mail.

Milestone Incentives

The idea behind the first ten Milestones was to push me out of my gaming comfort zone, and I named it "10 Steps to Better Gaming (Because Hindsight is 2020)." Each milestone is a game from one of the default game genres on Steam, starting with the genres I like... and ending with the ones I don't like. So the more you donate, the more I'm taken out of my comfort zone! All of these have been unlocked, and at some point I will play each and blog about the experience.

Original Stretch Goals

  • $1,100: Elevenses

I will consume and blog about a variety of "elevenses" snacks that are common around the world, and maybe even dress like a hobbit.

  • $1,200: LOTRO Points Giveaway on Discord

Like the last two years, to say a big thank-you to the Away Shall Fade kinship on Landroval (who are always helpful), I'll do a giveaway through a bot on Discord and each winner can win a code for 100 LOTRO Points!

  • $1,300: Thorin and Company, Part 1

In "The Hobbit," Thorin Oakenshield led a party of 13 in a quest to regain the lost Dwarven kingdom of the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. If we reach $1300, I will draw 13 different dragons and raffle them off!

  • $1,400: Fortnight

For reaching a solid 14, I will attempt to play Fortnite. Best say a prayer for me now!

  • $1,500: 15 Minutes of Fame

I will pick 4 games from different genres that were published in 2015 and play each for 15 minutes, then summarize them in a blog entry while being as tongue-in-cheek as possible. 9/19/20 Update: Games are: Cities: Skylines (simulation), Fairy Fencer F (RPG), Jotun: Valhalla Edition (action adventure), and There Came an Echo (strategy).

Additional Stretch Goals

  • $2,250: A LOTRO Yule Story Returns
Another narrative blog entry about the LOTRO Yule Festival, but with a different character -- chosen by my patrons on Patreon!

  • $2,500: Hot Shot
Spicy food challenge, to be determined by my patrons on Patreon!

  • $2,600: Thorin and Company, Part 2
Away Shall Fade kinship exclusive! All full members can claim a digital copy of any one of the raffled dragon drawings.

  • $2,750: It's a Secret
3 random donors will be given a mysterious choice... *spooky noises!*

  • $3,000: I Love You 3000
    - All donors will receive a digital copy of a special "Oakenshield" collage of the 13 dragon drawings.
    - One luck LOTRO donor will get to choose something special for the 2021 milestones and win some VIP time (or equivalent LOTRO-related gift). (This is separate from the pre-marathon giveaway of VIP time.)
    - ASF Exclusive Bonus: An additional digital copy of a special dragon drawing made just for ASF will be made available to all full members!

Standing Stone Games

SSG launched their Extra Life team effort this past week, so I went ahead and shuffled my stand-alone fundraising into their team. So not only am on on track to make a new personal record this year, but I get to help SSG's community goals. They've got some pretty awesome stuff available for donating this year, so be sure to check it out on the LOTRO forums.

Marathon Plan

If you missed it, after the huge success of the PvMP 4 Extra Life event on Labor Day weekend, I made the monumental decision to spend the entire 24-hour marathon playing LOTRO. I decided that starting a new character and seeing how far I can get in that span of time would be fun and diverse enough not to burn me out. Normally I spend the last 2-4 hours of the marathon in LOTRO since it's the game that brought me to Extra Life in the first place (thanks, Sapience). I've already started stockpiling supplies in my shared storage for the new character!

Additionally, I'll be doing some giveaways during the marathon. Some via my own Discord server (which you can join by becoming a patron on Patreon!), maybe something on Twitter, and a few somethings in LOTRO -- like the special VIP Time giveaway I have going for the ASF kinship. I'll be playing it mostly by ear and will likely do the giveaways whenever I need to take a short break from saving Middle-earth!

If you haven't donated yet, feel free to do so today! Donating to my page counts towards the community goals laid out in the LOTRO forums, so you'll be netting yourself some nice rewards in the process!
