2019 Extra Life $800 Milestone: A Horror Movie
I don't like horror movies. I'll watch some mildly creepy or classic movies, but in general... I leave the genre to my horror-obsessed husband. So when I was trying to come up with some milestones last year, the idea of watching a horror movie was added to the list. I decided to let my husband choose which one, and his choice was Alien, as I had never seen it. We finally got around to watching it the other day.
Guys. The movie wasn't terrible, but I don't feel like it aged very well. The retro-futuristic technology didn't "work" for me, mostly. And as much as I wanted to like Ripley... she fell into the "dumb-woman-in-a-horror-movie" trope the moment she put down her weapon to look for the cat after seeing her last two remaining crewmates have been killed. I'm sorry, but... priorities?
However, the movie gets points for irony as being thirty years ahead of its time in warning about the dangers of breaking quarantine. Also, Ian Holm and John Hurt lend it some great street cred from me, as someone who doesn't do sci-fi in general.
