Special Edition: A Space For The Unbound

In this special edition you'll find out about the indie adventure game A Space For The Unbound by Mojiken, releasing on January 19th!

Hello, friends! Welcome to 2023 of Gamer Reverie. The first entry of the year is a new type of entry that I will have just a couple times a month -- Special Edition. Just like newspapers will release a special edition to report on something important, I wanted to use the name to highlight something a little less common than wishlisted games or soundtracks. In true Gamer Reverie spirit, this first game is an indie game -- and it's being published by Toge Productions, the amazing company that has brought us gems like Coffee Talk and When The Past Was Around (also by Mojiken, the developer of this game).

So what's not to love about all of this visual information? Having been born in the 80's, I have a bias towards things from that decade and the 90's. They were simpler times and the nostalgia is wonderful! I am not, however, from Indonesia -- so that makes enough of a unique distinction in the game to keep it interesting. (If I wanted pure nostalgia I'd go for something more like Gone Home.)

The graphics: It takes a skilled hand to make pixel art, and even more skilled to animate it. May I direct your attention to the screenshots above which take place during the day, beneath a tree? Do you see those spots of sunlight on the ground? I couldn't render that with traditional media on my best day, much less effectively in pixels. It truly looks like someone skillfully pixelated an anime. That kind of detail promises to add immersion to this slice of life game.

The story: Alright, admittedly there's only so much revealed from the press kit about this, but it's enough to piece together that we've got two high school sweethearts who suddenly have to deal with supernatural events as well as their already overwhelming teenager problems and emotions. It's the adventurous after school special we actually want. This type of game and story is, to me, clearly aimed at gamers who are my age or maybe a little younger, but certainly not today's youth. This is nostalgia and fantasy wrapped up with life choices and hindsight-based baggage we all have. Sure, we can all ask ourselves what might have happened if we'd chosen to do something differently -- but what about if something supernatural happened on top of it?

The developers/publisher: I think most gamers recognize the title Coffee Talk, which was both developed and published by Toge Productions -- not to mention the sequel, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus and Butterfly, is highly anticipated this year. Add in the talent of Mojiken, and you can expect a delightfully introspective and beautiful game. If you want a taste of what Mojiken offers, they have a free, experimental silent story available on Steam called A Raven Monologue.

I will probably be buying this game at some point, and I hope you will consider it as well -- or any of the other titles from Mojiken and Toge Productions!
