Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-One - Special Events

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

As if it wasn't magical enough to play a hero or heroine in Middle-earth, Lord of the Rings Online offers a variety of extra events on a regular basis. In this entry, I'll talk about the Special Events that take place over long weekends, just because, or leading up to something else.

Hobnanigans

2021 Schedule: February 4 - 8; April 1 - 5

This is a weird kind of sport that was introduced way back in 2007. It's also called Chicken Ball or Chicken Hockey, and consists of replacing a normal sports ball with a chicken and trying to get past an opposing team to a goal. It has never appealed to me, and I don't personally know anyone who has played (or admits to), but it offers a lengthy list of rewards to be bartered for: cosmetics, cosmetic pets, emotes, facepaint stencils, housing decorations, and crafting recipes. There are fields set up for this event next to the Bree-land festival grounds.

Buried Treasure Event

2021 Schedule: May 27 - June 1; September 30 - October 5

As the name suggests, the theme of this event is to dig up buried treasure. It takes place in Ered Luin, off the right side of the road as you travel from Gondamon to Noglond. It is fast-paced and very much luck-based. You are given some items to start with, and after they're used you have to buy more using the tokens you are trying to collect from the dig sites, or from the LOTRO Store for Points. The rewards you can barter for include: cosmetics, housing decorations, emotes, cosmetic pets, facepaint stencils, crafting recipes, Motes of Enchantment, and a mount. The Huge Treasure Cache is the only way to acquire the event mounts: Cave-claw Steed, Treasure Laden Goat, Treasure Laden Steed

Tale of the Shipwrecked Mariners

2021 Schedule: September 16 - 21

Taking place annually around Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th), this event is all about collecting lost goods that have been scattered along the Brandywine River and bringing them back to the crew whose ship hit hard weather. They will happily give you stuff in exchange. Rewards include pirate-y attire and are in desperate need of a refresh. If you're looking for the event, visit Buckland and cross the road. You'll find the NPCs near the river.

Baggins' Birthday

2021 Schedule: September 21 - 27

This is an annual little quest that centers on Bilbo and Frodo's shared birthday (September 22nd). You will get an automatic quest bestowal which will send you to Rivendell if you have never done it before, and you will be tasked with making a trip to the Shire. I highly recommend reading all of the quest text and dialogue for this one since you only get it once per character. It's entertaining! You'll be rewarded with a neat housing decoration as well as a title.

Durin's Day

2021 Schedule: October 15 - 21

Durin's Day is the 19th of October and is the first day of the Dwarves' New Year. During this in-game event, if you visit the side-door of Erebor where Thorin and Company entered, you will find the inscribed memorial stone as well as have a breathtaking view of the sun and moon in the sky at the same time! You can also collect titles by doing this in consecutive years.

(Ill Omens) Skirmish Event

2021 Schedule: February 10 - March 8

The events schedule doesn't actually say "Ill Omens" on it, but it happened at that time of year last year, so... that's probably what it is. I have not participated in this event because it honestly felt too grindy to me, and I don't think I was the right level to participate anyway. I don't run skirmishes very often, and this event involves running them at Tier 3 and tackling extra mobs. Completing the associated deeds earns titles, barter items, and an essence bounty.

Other Events

Scattered throughout the year are extra little bonus events to keep things interesting. These events range from extra Crafting or Virtue XP to bonus Skirmish Marks and Lootbox Embers/Motes. There are also VIP weekends where those who are VIP get bonuses to XP. Those are great to watch for if you're wanting to do some leveling or crafting! For the full list of events, you can check out the official schedule here which is where it will be kept updated: LOTRO Events Schedule
