Soundtrack Saturday: Crying Suns

In this weekly feature, I recommend game soundtracks. I share a few of my favorite tracks, talk about why everyone should listen to the soundtrack, and a little bit about the composer. This week's choice is Crying Suns by Alt Shift.

MY FAVORITE TRACKS

(The titles link to YouTube videos... and I highly recommend some good headphones to best enjoy all of the subtle elements of the music!)

Idaho Clone 486
(Length: 5:50) It's another one of those tracks with the moving under-layer! This time, we get it in a sci-fi, dark ambient tone that is reminiscent of Vangelis's pieces from Blade Runner, but with more sophisticated sounds and musical elements (we're not stuck in the 80's).

Cell 1184
(Length: 2:44) This one is almost soothing to listen to with the chime sounds, but the infusion of distortion and digital sounds reminds you this is in a dark and space-y future.

Oberon
(Length: 3:20) A very regal opening, not unlike the namesake (King of the Fairies), which is what got my attention first. The track has all the same qualities as the rest of them, but somehow carries itself a little differently. The emphasis of this seems to be the snythesized horn sound at the 2:00 mark. Finishing off with a compelling beat rounds it out beautifully, also.

Rebecca
(Length: 3:10) There's an attempt at a melody through the space-y noise and distortion, and it makes me want to know what's going on with the story at this point. It has a tragic vibe to it.

Encounter Supreme
(Length: 3:44) Dark and intense, this is a bass-heavy track intent on emphasizing potentially demoralizing conflict, life or death, dire consequences... I don't think I need to continue that list if you're listening to the track.

WHY I RECOMMEND IT

I actually recommended this game to my husband last fall when he was trying to get a feel for new indie games that were coming out. He gave it a try and ended up going with a different game for his interests, but just the beginning part of the game was so amazingly intriguing to me! It started being mentioned a lot for its music, and that's why I decided to add it to my schedule for Soundtrack Saturday.

While it isn't the type of music I would normally listen to and discuss at length, it is superb for what it is! If you like a good futuristic, sci-fi sound that is dark and ominous and uncertain... this is for you.

THE COMPOSER: AYMERIC SCHWARTZ

Since this was put out by a French company, it's hard to find any concrete information about the composer aside from his affiliations with companies he's composed for. In his repertoire are sound & music supervision in Valiant Hearts: The Great War (Ubisoft), composer for DeadCore (Bandai Namco), sound design in Rayman Adventures (Ubisoft), sound design in Divinity: Original Sin II (Larian Studios), and sound designer in Absolver (Devolver Digital).
